Calendula flower(Calendula officinalis)

The natural distribution of the common Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is in Central and Southern Europe, Western Asia, and North America. In Estonia, marigold is cultivated as an ornamental plant, and it rarely naturalizes. Calendula is an undemanding plant that grows well even in partial shade. It is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. The Calendula flower is a widely known medicinal herb, valued for its versatile health-supporting properties. This bright orange or yellow-flowered plant is primarily found in the Mediterranean region but is widely cultivated around the world. Calendula is known for its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and wound-healing properties. It is often used to soothe skin irritations, minor wounds, burns, and insect bites. Calendula is also used as a mouthwash for oral mucosal ulcers and sore throats. The flowers, which contain carotenoids, essential oils, saponins, flavonoids, bitter compounds, and more, are the part of the plant typically used for medicinal purposes. Calendula is an easy-to-grow, low-maintenance plant that blooms for a long time. The flowers are harvested during the blooming period from June to September. Interesting to know: Eeriksaare Calendula is 100% orange. Yellow plants have been bred out of it through cultivation. The orange Calendula retains its beautiful color longer than the yellow variety.

The health-promoting properties of Calendula:

1. Anti-inflammatory effects. Helps reduce inflammation both internally and externally. Good for relieving arthritis, muscle aches and skin irritations.

2. Antiseptic and wound healing properties. Disinfects wounds, speeds up tissue recovery and promotes skin healing. Use for minor wounds, burns, scrapes and insect bites.

3. Supporting skin health. Treats acne, eczema and dermatitis. Moisturises and soothes dry or irritated skin, leaving it supple and radiant.

4. Improving the digestion. Calendula flower tea is used to relieve stomach and intestinal ailments such as ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease and heartburn. It soothes the digestive tract and aids digestion.

5. Immune support. Rich in antioxidants and bioactive compounds that help fight free radicals and strengthen the body’s defences.

6. Improving oral health. As a rinse, calendula helps relieve gingivitis and mouth sores. It supports the health of the oral mucosa and also helps prevent inflammation.

7. Relieving menstrual cramps. Calendula flower can help to reduce menstrual pain and promote regular cycles. Its calming effects can help relieve anxiety and stress.

Anthony William, the Medical Medium, says that Calendula can be used internally as tea, tincture, or extract, and is very helpful and soothing for conditions like stomach ulcers, digestive disorders, colitis, heartburn, gallbladder issues, liver problems, menstrual cramps, and chronic inflammation. Calendula’s antiviral properties also support the immune and lymphatic systems. According to him, Calendula even has anticancer properties, and at the cellular level, it helps to improve the aftereffects of radiation, such as from chemotherapy. Additionally, Calendula is great for eye rinsing in cases of conjunctivitis and dry, itchy eyes. Read more about Calendula on the Medical Medium’s blog.

Possible uses:

  • Tincture or tea: Calendula teas and tinctures have been used to support digestion, protect the stomach lining, and alleviate menstrual pain. Drinking 1-2 cups of calendula tea daily helps cleanse your body and stimulate blood circulation.
  • Oils, ointments, and creams: Due to its skin-supporting and rejuvenating properties, calendula is used in many cosmetic products, such as toners, face masks, creams, and hair care products.
  • Mouth rinsing: For the care of the gums and the mucous membranes of the mouth, as well as in the case of sore throats, the mouth can be rinsed or the throat can be cleared by gargling.
  • In food: Calendula flowers can be used as a garnish on foods.

Calendula is a natural and safe remedy, but in case of pregnancy or allergies, a specialist should be consulted before use. Thanks to its wide range of uses, it is an indispensable herb in both home pharmacy and natural cosmetics.
